Marvel puts the Gold Coast on its nine-city Avengers: Doomsday tour, the only stop in Australia

The Gold Coast is one of nine cities on Marvel Studios' global promotional tour for Avengers: Doomsday, and the only one in Australia. Marvel has not yet said when the tour arrives or which stars will make the trip, with more details expected this week. The film opens in Australian cinemas on 17 December, a day before its worldwide release.

Three things to know

  1. The nine cities are Las Vegas, São Paulo, the Gold Coast, Rome, London, Seoul, Shanghai, Toronto and Los Angeles. Dates and the cast line-up for each stop have not been announced.
  2. Australians have already shown up for this one: Disney says presales took more than $1 million in the first 24 hours in September, the biggest first day of presales for any film in Australia this year and the best 24-hour result in five years.
  3. Chris Hemsworth, Marvel's Australian Thor, shared the announcement with the words "Doomsday is coming".

The Avengers are coming to Queensland. Marvel Studios has named the Gold Coast as one of nine cities on its Avengers: Doomsday global tour, the press and fan run that will take the film’s stars around the world in the weeks before it opens.

The tour list, revealed on Thursday through the film’s online “Doomsday Clock” countdown and Marvel’s social media accounts, takes in Las Vegas, São Paulo, the Gold Coast, Rome, London, Seoul, Shanghai, Toronto and Los Angeles. It spans five continents, and the Gold Coast is the only stop in Australia or New Zealand.

What fans will not yet find is a date. Marvel has not said when each city’s event will take place, what form it will take, or which members of the cast will attend. More details are expected to be announced this week.

Why the Gold Coast?

Marvel has not explained its choice, but the city is not new territory for the studio. Thor: Ragnarok was filmed at Village Roadshow Studios on the Gold Coast, and the region has built itself into one of Australia’s main bases for big-budget international productions.

It also gives the tour a home-ground hero. Chris Hemsworth, who plays Thor, reshared the tour announcement on Thursday with the caption “Doomsday is coming”.

What is Avengers: Doomsday?

It is Marvel’s biggest swing since Avengers: Endgame in 2019. Anthony and Joe Russo, who directed Infinity War and Endgame, are back behind the camera, and the film brings together heroes from three different universes against a new threat.

The cast is as large as any Marvel has assembled, led by Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Pedro Pascal, Florence Pugh, Paul Rudd, Anthony Mackie, Sebastian Stan, Vanessa Kirby, Letitia Wright, Simu Liu, Channing Tatum and Tom Hiddleston, with Ian McKellen, Patrick Stewart, James Marsden and Kelsey Grammer bringing back characters from Fox’s X-Men films.

When can Australians see it?

Avengers: Doomsday opens in Australian cinemas on Thursday 17 December, a day ahead of its 18 December release in the United States, so local audiences will be among the first in the world to see it.

Demand is already there. When presales opened in September, Disney said the film took more than $1 million in its first 24 hours. Those sales came alongside Avengers Endgame: Encore, a re-release of the 2019 film with an exclusive preview of Doomsday, which went to No. 1 at the Australian box office.

What does it mean for cinemas?

The film lands in the middle of the summer school holidays, the busiest stretch of the year for Australian cinemas. A tour stop on the Gold Coast weeks before release gives Disney a local launch pad for a film it is already treating as the event of the season.
