Hiring Christmas casuals under Payday Super: what small employers must get right this summer
This is the first Christmas hiring season since super stopped being a quarterly bill and became a payday one. VNN sets out the deadlines that now apply to every pay run, the extra time allowed for new staff, how the new super guarantee charge is built, and what the ATO says it will look for in the first year, so a café, shop or farm can take on seasonal staff without a costly mistake.
Until this year, an employer who took on Christmas casuals in November had until 28 January to pay their super for the December quarter. Under Payday Super, which began on 1 July 2026, that super must reach each worker’s fund within 7 business days of every payday, and the Small Business Superannuation Clearing House that many small employers relied on has closed.
This report explains what that means in practice for a business hiring seasonal staff over the next eight weeks: the deadlines, the extra time allowed for new starters, what to set up before the first pay run, how much a late payment can now cost, and how the ATO has said it will treat employers in the first year. It is written for owners and bookkeepers who want a checklist they can work through this weekend.
