Nicki Minaj answers Republican midterm losses with 15-point list declaring Trump is “STILL your PRESIDENT”

Rapper Nicki Minaj, one of Donald Trump's most visible celebrity backers this year, has responded to the Democrats' midterm wins with a 15-point list on X that opened by reminding critics Trump is still president. Most of the Republican candidates she campaigned for lost their races.

Three things to know

  1. The day after the 3 November midterms, Minaj posted a numbered list on X opening with "Trump is STILL your PRESIDENT", then added two final points praising Elon Musk and his chatbot Grok.
  2. Both Michigan Republicans she rallied for alongside Trump in October, Senate candidate Mike Rogers and governor candidate John James, lost; Florida's Byron Donalds was a rare winner among her picks.
  3. One line, "I don't vote, I VETO", drew the most criticism online, because Minaj, who was born in Trinidad and Tobago, has said she cannot vote in US elections.

Nicki Minaj has responded to the Republican Party’s heavy losses in the US midterm elections with a defiant 15-point list on X, telling critics that Donald Trump remains president and that they should “STAY MAD”.

The rapper posted the list on Wednesday 4 November, US time, the day after Democrats swept to control of both houses of Congress. It came with a short selfie video and opened with the line “Trump is STILL your PRESIDENT.”

Minaj had been one of the most prominent celebrity supporters of Trump and the Republicans in the months before the vote, and most of the candidates she backed lost.

What did she post?

The list, written in Minaj’s trademark capitals, mixed politics, faith and fan service. Alongside the opening line about Trump, she declared that Jesus is still Lord, that Christians are still being killed and that knowledge is power. She praised an unspecified “great insight” from Vice President JD Vance and congratulated two Florida Republicans who won, Representative Anna Paulina Luna and governor-elect Byron Donalds.

One point took aim at spending “a billion on a losing campaign full of celebrities”, which was widely read as a jab at Kamala Harris’s 2024 presidential campaign, though Minaj did not name anyone. Others were addressed to her fans, the Barbz, and to her critics, whom she told to “stay tuned”. She urged “our people” to wake up, without saying who she meant, and signed off with “Love you” and an American flag.

In a follow-up post headed “Last thing”, she added points 14 and 15. The first said Elon Musk is still a trillionaire and that her critics are still posting on his app. The second praised Grok, the artificial intelligence chatbot built into X by Musk’s company xAI, which she said had changed her life for the better.

Why did “I don’t vote, I VETO” draw criticism?

The line that drew the most attention was “I don’t vote, I VETO.”

Minaj was born in Trinidad and Tobago and moved to the United States as a child, and she has said she cannot vote in US elections. Critics on X were quick to point that out, with some telling her that the result was a matter for American voters and others noting that a person without a vote has no veto either.

How did her candidates do?

In late October, Minaj joined Trump at a rally in Port Huron, Michigan, to support Mike Rogers in the race for an open US Senate seat and John James in the race for governor. She urged her followers to vote Republican.

Both men lost. Democrat Abdul El-Sayed won the Michigan Senate seat, and Democrat Jocelyn Benson won the governorship.

In New York, Republican Bruce Blakeman, whom Minaj also supported, failed to unseat Democratic Governor Kathy Hochul.

Her one clear success was in Florida, where Byron Donalds won the race for governor against Democrat David Jolly, becoming the state’s first Black governor.

What does it mean for Trump?

Minaj’s list is a small footnote to a big night for the Democrats, who won control of both the House of Representatives and the Senate and will be able to block Trump’s agenda and launch investigations for the last two years of his term.

The results in Michigan, a state Trump carried in 2024, suggest that her star power did little to hold back the swing against the Republicans there.

Minaj has shown no sign of stepping back. Her posts make clear she intends to keep backing Trump, and Musk, through the second half of his term.
